Gaza & the southern coast
Gaza غزة
A historic Mediterranean port at the heart of the southern coastal district. Its dress archive is inseparable from al-Majdal, the major weaving centre whose loom tradition was carried into Gaza after 1948.

Regional stitchأسلوب المنطقة
Embroidery was often concentrated on the chest, with heavier work on the side panels of some dresses. Gaza thobes used cotton-and-silk cloth woven in al-Majdal and joined with manajel stitching.
Paletteالألوان
Indigo blue or black grounds; magenta, violet-red and purple, with touches of blue and green.
Materialsالخامات
Locally loom-woven cotton and silk from al-Majdal; silk embroidery thread; colourful beads on the takiyat shabak cap.
Motifs & meaningالرموز والمعنى
Triangles & chevrons
Bold triangular and V-shaped geometry is a defining visual marker of Gaza-area dress. The historical sources do not assign it one universal symbolic meaning.
Hijab · the amulet
A triangular motif used prominently on chest and side panels. Amulet forms in Palestinian dress carried protective associations.
How to read this archiveHistorical dress was usually identified by village, district and period—not by modern city boundaries alone. Motif meanings could also vary by maker and family; where no single meaning is documented, this archive says so.
